The Thompson Center Redesign

When rethinking the Thompson Center, I stripped down the interior to a more minimal feel, with raw materials such as concrete, ash wood flooring, and a more neutral color scheme to brighten up the space. I replaced the piazza flooring with raw stone flooring to give a natural feel, while still trying to emulate the outdoor center space that Helmut Jahn wanted to incorporate.
By creating this garden space, it would add a more serene and relaxing aspect to not just the Thompson Center itself but Downtown Chicago as a whole. The Thompson Center resides at the heart of downtown, with accesible access to several train lines, bus stops, and the pedway as well, making it a Chicago Mecca. The greenhouse garden will bring toget the commuinty in a positive way and open up the Thompson center to the public and hopefully draw in more people, whether its visiting the gardens, dining in at the food court, passing through, or socializing in the common spaces. The idea of a vertical farming “green- house” at the front of the building, would draw more people to the space while also benifiting the community in a positive and sustainable way as well.
